Wales maintained their 100% record at the 2019 Rugby World Cup with a 29-17 win over Fiji in Pool D, having led 14-10 at half-time. Josh Adams was the hero, scoring three of their four tries to settle a tough tussle.

Fiji came flying out of the blocks and had the game’s first try three minutes in. They worked the ball out wide to Josua Tuisova following a scrum and he fended off Adams as well as last-ditch efforts from Dan Biggar and Josh Navidi, going all the way.

To make matters worse for Wales, Ken Owens was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle before Fiji scored their second try in the ninth minute. Semi Radradra’s long pass found Kini Murimurivalu out wide and he slipped inside to go over.

A yellow card to Tevita Cavubati a quarter of an hour in changed the complexion of the game. Josh Adams then scored Wales’ first try three minutes later as he rose above Ben Volavola to get on the end of a Dan Biggar cross-kick.

No sooner were Fiji back up to 15 men than Semi Kunatani saw yellow. The flanker took one for the team as Fiji had conceded four penalties in quick succession.

Wales had camped near the Fijian try-line for some time and it finally paid off on the half-hour mark as Jonathan Davies’ quick pass set Adams up for his second try on the left.

Viliame Mata nearly stole the lead back for Fiji just before half-time with a try, but Ben Volavola’s pass to him was adjudged to have gone forward.

Fiji started the second half as they did the first — on the front foot. Once again, they saw a potential try disallowed for a forward pass — this time from Murimurivalu.

Adams the hat-trick hero as Wales vanquish valiant Fiji

In the 53rd minute, Wales were reduced to 14 men again for 10 minutes. James Davies was adjudged to have cynically killed off the momentum with an infringement after Radradra’s marauding run was stopped. Immediately afterwards, Fiji regained the lead with a penalty try off the lineout maul.

A Rhys Patchell penalty kick from 42 metres out levelled the scores before Adams sealed his hat-trick, once again with the help of a wonderful pass from Jonathan Davies out wide.

Liam Williams then secured the bonus point for Wales, profiting off Gareth Davies’ run through the heart of the Fiji defence as the scrum-half set him up for the finish.

Fiji’s World Cup journey has come to an end, but although they suffered an embarrassing defeat to Uruguay, they can be proud of their performances against the Wallabies and Wales.
