Pirates’ Riveiro dispels cup specialist talk, wary of Spurs

After winning three trophies, Orlando Pirates mentor Jose Riveiro dispels the talk that he is a cup specialist but wary of Spurs.

Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro dispels the talk that he is a cup specialist as they look ahead to the Carling Knockout Cup clash versus Cape Town Spurs.

Riveiro didn’t hide his professionalism and says Spurs are capable of causing an upset against the newly crowned MTN8 champions, Pirates.

The Spaniard bagged his third trophy in the South African top flight when he guided Pirates to a victory over Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.

RIVEIRO DISPELS CUP SPECIALIST TALK, WARY OF SPURS

Riveiro also explains that beating Masandawana doesn’t mean they have an advantage of beating the DStv Premiership bottom-placed Spurs.

“If you want to be in the final, you’ll have to beat more than just Pirates,” said Riveiro per IOL.

“What we did in the past is done. We must look to the future. We all start with the same probability of wanting to win the trophy.

“We are going to try and win again. But for sure, we are going to be a tough opponent for every team that we will meet in the competition.”

PIRATES’ RIVEIRO: NO ADVANTAGE AFTER SUNDOWNS WIN

The Buccaneers defied the odds against the reigning league champions at Moses Mabhida Stadium but Riveiro is not carried away.

Prior to the sold-out Wafa Wafa final, Sundowns beat Pirates at Orlando Stadium in the league but the coach wants more from his troops in the Carling tournament.

“No, I don’t think so. We can consider it like an advantage, but we can consider it like a disadvantage as well,” adds Riveiro.

“We are coming from a final against Sundowns, the hype is extremely high.

“So, we need to find a way to prepare the players mentally to understand that it’s a knockout game. I am sure the players will understand the importance of the game and things are going to work well for us.”
