On this day in South African sports history one of the great Olympic moments happened in Barcelona when Elana Meyer won the Silver medal in the Women’s 10,000m.

On this day in South African sports history the Springboks suffered one of their lowest lows and also completed an unbeaten tour of Australia.

On this day in South African history, the Battle of Muizenberg took place during the Napoleonic Wars, British troops disembarked at Muizenberg and moved towards Cape Town.

1879 – One of South Africa’s fastest bowlers was born on this day. JJ “Kodgee” Kotze took only six Test wickets at 40.50, but most of the bowling was done by googly bowlers at the time and he changed some perceptions of how cricket should be played.

1923- Former Springbok Willem Barnard was born on this day in 1923. Barnard. The early part of his career was disrupted by WWII and he played just two Test matches.

1971 – The Springboks win the third Test on their tour of Australia ending the visit having won every match they played Downunder.

1992 – Elana Meyer wins Silver in the Women’s 10,000-metres at the Barcelona Olympics. Meyer famously joined Derartu Tulu on her victory lap creating a great moment in sporting history. On the same day, Wayne Ferreira and Piet Norval claimed Silver in the men’s doubles tennis.

1999 – The Springboks lose 34-18 to the All Blacks at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The defeat was the fourth Test in a row that South Africa lost.

2016 – Cameron van der Burgh wins a Silver Medal at the Rio Olympics by coming second in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke during Day 2 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

2017 – Caster Semenya claims the Bronze medal in the Women’s 1500m at the IAAF World Championships in London.
