On this day in South African sports history – 2 August

On this day in 2012 our rowers brought home an Olympic Gold medal from the London games with an inspired performance, the day has also seen a number of other significant events.

The second day of the month of August has been a popular date for rugby Tests but there have been plenty of other happenings on this day.

1887 – Former SA wicketkeeper Tommy Ward was born. In his 12-year Test career, he made 32 dismissals, including 13 stumpings, and added some useful runs, including two half centuries.

1948 – Sprinter Daphne Robb comes third in the Women’s 100-metres semifinal at the London Olympic Games on this day.

1948 London Olympics 100 metres women’s semi-final at Wembley Stadium which was won by Dorothy Manley (Great Britain) (No 691), second Patricia Jones (Canada) (No 679) and third Daphne Robb (South Africa) (No905)

1968 – The Springboks trounce the Wallabies 30-11 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

1997 – SA Boxer Patrick Quka, wins the World Boxing Union (WBU) Bantamweight title.

1997 – The Springboks go down 20-32 against Australia in the Tri-nation series in Brisbane on this day.

2000- The Proteas beat Sri Lanka by just seven runs in the second Test at Kandy to level the series. Sri Lanka needed just 177 to win but South Africa took their last four wickets for eight runs to win the match.

2002 – Ryk Neethling wins Bronze in the Men’s 100m Freestyle swimming Final from the Manchester Aquatics centre during the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Mandy Loots wins Silver in the Women’s 100m Butterfly. In Men’s Hockey SA lose 1-3 to Australia in the semi-finals.

2003 – The Springboks crash to a 29-9 defeat to Australia in Brisbane during a Tri-Nations match at the Suncorp Stadium on this day. The match was the fifth successive Test Australia had won against South Africa in the Queensland city.

2009 – Gerhard Zandberg wins the Bronze medal in the Men’s 50m Backstroke Final at the 13th FINA World Championships at the Stadio del Nuoto on this day in Rome, Italy.

2012 – James Thompson, Matthew Brittain, John Smith and Sizwe Ndlovu win the gold medal in the men’s lightweight four final A of the rowing event during the London 2012 Olympic Games, at Eton Dorney Rowing Centre in Eton.

2014 – Khotso Mokoena wins Commonwealth Games gold in the Men’s Triple Jump at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Tulani Mbenge earns a Bronze Medal in Boxing’s Men’s Welter (69kg) Division at the SSE Hydro. SA’s Women’s Hockey team misses out on Bronze after losing to New Zealand.
