SPAR Proteas’ van der Merwe speaks unity in the team

SPAR Proteas defender Shadine van der Merwe is delighted and proud of the unity in the netball team ahead of the World Cup.

She is a versatile defender and SPAR Proteas vice-captain, Shadine van der Merwe speaks about the importance of unity ahead of the Netball World Cup.

Van der Merwe says all players contribute no matter their position, but being a defender for the SPAR Proteas is about applying pressure to build momentum and change the game – she just enjoys bringing that vibe and energy.

In a press release dispatched to The South African through Splash PR on behalf of the technical sponsor, Puma, van der Merwe says it’s an honour to represent Mzansi at the global showpiece.

The SPAR Proteas will unite the country when they host the world in Cape Town at the International Convention Centre between July 28 and August 06.

SPAR PROTEAS VAN DER MERWE ON IMPORTANCE OF WORLD CUP

The bubbly defender is confident ahead of the world tournament that will be hosted on South African soil for the first time, saying it’s a special one.

Van der Merwe said she banking on their unity as a team as coach Norma Plummer will look to bring glory to the nation.

“It’s always an absolute honour to represent my country anywhere! But what makes this so special is being able to represent my family and friends and to be proud of what I have achieved,” she said.

“Our unity! We come from various backgrounds and cultures, and we have so much respect for each other! On court, we know how to fight till the end.”

In addition, the defender also touched on her stint in the Super League in Britain urging her fellow teammates to consider that option.

“You get to experience netball as a career and playing abroad provides international experience. You learn a lot and get to play and train with some of the best netballers,” added van der Merwe.

VAN DER MERWE PRAISES PUMA FOR THEIR OFFICIAL KIT

The talented netball star, Van der Merwe has also praised the German sports manufacturer, for the stunning kit.

As a Puma-sponsored athlete herself, van der Merwe believes the outfit depicts diversity and unity in South Africa.

“I love it! The kit is colourful and shows both diversity and unity. It suits my personality,” she continued while also sharing a bit of advice with the youth.

“The brand itself, and also as an outsider I could see that how they treat their ambassadors is beautiful.

“Sometimes it can be scary but don’t be afraid to take some risks! There will be disappointments, but without them, I would not have been able to grow both as a player and a person.”

As a golf lover and player, van der Merwe also owns a VW Kombi which she nicknamed ‘Ertjie’ (little pea).

“I love playing golf with friends. Even though it can frustrate you, when I play golf I completely switch off and just focus on the next shot … or on where to start looking for my ball!” she concluded.
