WATCH: Dricus du Plessis says Israel Adesanya ‘handled himself like a clown’

South African MMA hero Dricus du Plessis wasn’t in the mood for Israel Adesanya’s games after his TKO win over Robert Whittaker.

Du Plessis has riled Adesanya to such an extent that champion is struggling to control himself.

Adesanya entered the Octagon to deliver an expletive-laden and barely coherent rant at the South African.

Du Plessis was keen to savour the moment of his sixth straight win in UFC and a victory over someone he considers an icon of the sport.

While heading into the post-fight presser du Plessis told a UFC camera crew ‘we just saw the champion handling himself like a clown again’.

Du Plessis had plenty of good things to say about Whittaker, who he described as a gentleman.

“This is truly the biggest honor of my whole fighting career being able to share the cage with a legend,” du Plessis said during his post-fight interview with the UFC’s Joe Rogan. “A guy whose poster I had in my room, wishing to be like someday. Robert, I don’t know where he is but he’s a gentleman, a humble man and truly a legend of this sport.”

DDP prepared to win not prove anyone wrong

Du Plessis had insisted before the bout that he was coming to Las Vegas to win a fight not to prove anyone wrong, although he certainly put the wider MMA media to shame by showing up their pre-fight predictions.

“I don’t really care about proving people wrong. For me it is more about proving people right,” Du Plessis told the media earlier in the week.

“Odds don’t win fights, fighters win fights, and I am a fighter so all those who have written me off will soon find out if they make it to the top of the pile.”
