Jose Mourinho bemoaned his team playing football that’s too stylish after they suffered a shock defeat on Sunday.

Mourinho isn’t known for mincing his words. And his reaction after Manchester United handed the title to City on Sunday after a shock 0-1 defeat against West Brom at Old Trafford was no different.

“I think we were deservedly punished. We were masters in complication. Everything was complicated. Players they didn’t want to or couldn’t play simple,” Mourinho told SkyTV afterwards.

“Everything was one more touch, one more flick, one more pass, one more touch,” Mounrinho added.

The irony that this is exactly how Manchester City play will not be lost on anyone.

Mourinho said the there was no continuity or fluidity in the team’s play on Sunday, but he said he thought the result was harsh.

“I don’t think we deserve to lose, but we gave them the opportunity to win the match,” he added.

United had beaten City in a stunning comeback during the derby, denying them the title, but denied that win was the most important win of the season.  He also said that it would be unfair to put too much emphasis on United’s loss.

“I won too much to be happy with one big victory. City won the title because they won more points than us, you are not going to say that they won because we gave them the title. that’s not fair to them,” Mourinho said.

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, had spent the day on the golf course.

City are 16 points clear of second-placed United, who can only take a maximum of 15 points from their remaining five games.

Winning the title with five matches to go makes City the joint earliest champions in the Premier League era – matching the achievement of the 2000-01 Manchester United team.
