Football

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has warned fans to stay away from stadiums once the top-flight returns behind closed doors on Wednesday. The league resumes after a three-month hiatus with Aston Villa’s home game against Sheffield United and Arsenal’s trip to Manchester City.

The British government on Tuesday bowed to demands by Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford to change its policy on free school meals for the poorest children, amid growing concerns about the impact of the coronavirus lockdown on low-income families.

Champions League winner Rafael Benitez and former Barcelona star Paulinho have arrived back in China, but now face 14 days’ quarantine and an indefinite wait for the season to begin. About a third of the foreign players and coaches in the Chinese Super League have been unable to come back since late March after the country barred entry to most foreigners.

As football returns after a long suspension, UEFA is set to announce the format for the latter stages of the Champions League at a key meeting on Wednesday 17 June which will also raise the thorny issue of the postponed, pan-continental Euro 2020.

Bafana Bafana defender Sifiso Hlanti could be playing his football at Orlando Pirates next season. The Buccaneers have been linked to a number of Wits players following the sale of the club’s PSL franchise to TTM. Thulani Hlatshwayo, Deon Hotto, Thabang Monare, Buhlebuyeza Mkhwanazi and Elias Pelembe have also been linked with a move away from their new owners.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits have reached an agreement for goalkeeper Ricardo Goss and what the Brazilians have put on the table has now been revealed.

Rugby

Italy‘s New Zealand-born lock Dean Budd announced his retirement from international rugby having made 29 appearances for the Azzurri. 

The French rugby union federation (FRU) streamlined its third division, creating a single pool of 14 teams in the hope it offers clubs the chance to get on a proper footing before venturing into the professional leagues. The third division, which will be called la Nationale, was previously the Federale 1 and comprised an unwieldly 48 teams divided into four pools of 12.

Rugby Australia announces that it had recruited heavy-hitters from business and politics, including former prime minister John Howard, to boost its bid for the 2027 World Cup.

Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies revealed that he turned down French clubs Agen and Pau to stay in Johannesburg and continue playing for the Lions.

Horse racing

Queen Elizabeth II said Royal Ascot would remain one of Britain’s finest sporting occasions despite being forced behind closed doors as the meeting got underway on Tuesday 16 June. The 94-year-old monarch is missing the five-day event for the first time in her 68-year reign.

Cricket

Staging the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia this year is “unrealistic” in the midst of a global coronavirus pandemic, Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings admitted Tuesday. The tournament is scheduled to take place from 18 October to 15 November, and officials have previously said they are planning for it to proceed on those dates.

Former head of sales and sponsor relations at Cricket South Africa, Clive Eksteen, will take his case to the CCMA, following his dismissal on Sunday.

Gridiron

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday 15 June he would welcome exiled quarterback Colin Kaepernick back into the league in any capacity, including as a player.

Baseball

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday he is no longer confident that the 2020 season will be played as a financial wrangle with players remained deadlocked.
