KwaZulu-Natal Athletics has issued a statement in which a number of runners caught cheating in this year’s Comrades Marathon have been named and shamed.

This year’s ‘up’ run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg took place on 9 June.

After a lengthy investigation, six runners were identified as having cheated in some manner in what was the 97th edition of the famed race.

KwaZulu-Natal Athletics president Steve Mkasi said that ‘investigations will continue and further announcements will be made in due course’.

He appealed to athletes to ‘uphold the ethos and rule of all road running events in the province and elsewhere’.

Mkasi also commended the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) for innovative ways of identifying cheats to ensure that athletes conform to race rules.
