Kaizer Chiefs look to have suffered another huge injury blow with Lebogang Manyama set for an extended period on the sidelines.

The player missed the Caf Confederations Cup defeat to Zesco United after leaving the field injured in the 55th minute of Amakhosi’s 3-2 win over AmaZulu on Wednesday.

The club is set to learn the extent of his injury in the coming days but, according to coach Ernst Middendorp, he is unlikely to take any further part in the current season.

“I think everybody saw the brutal foul. There’s no doubt about it from the defender. We have to pay for it.

“I believe the season is finished for him because it’s a ligament problem. But good we have to take a little time.

“We will get the final result the latest on Monday or Tuesday. But I’m not expecting to have him back. I’m very happy to see Rama(Ramahlwe Mphahlele) coming back.

“He played Diski yesterday. It was the first step of players coming back to go into the next match and thank God we have a week time now.”

Manyama recently returned from a long lay-off after he fractured his elbow when he was involved in a car accident while making his way home from training late last year.

If ruled out for the rest of the season, he will join captain Itumeleng Khune, who will also not play any further part in the club’s campaign.

In the duo’s absence, Kaizer Chiefs conceded a further two goals in the tie against Zesco, while failing to even get close to the required goals needed to secure a place in the group stage of the tournament – losing 5-2 on aggregate.

Their next assignment is the Nedbank Cup first-round fixture against third-tier outfit, Tornado in Mdantsane next Sunday.
