With Itumeleng Khune out for the rest of the season, Kaizer Chiefs are in the market for a goalkeeper, and all indications are that the man they have set their sights on is the Bafana number one’s understudy, Darren Keet.

While the club has been rather mum about its transfer activity in the current window, Bidvest Wits coach, Gavin Hunt recently let slip that Amakhosi were after his lanky shot-stopper’s services.

Following Chiefs’ 3-2 victory over AmaZulu on Wednesday night, coach Ernst Middendorp revealed that he was interested in landing the 29-year-old’s signature, and would jump at the opportunity should he be made available.

“I heard Gavin Hunt was throwing Darren Keet on the market. If he wants to release him we can definitely take him.”

The German tactician did, however, revert back to his word that the Soweto giants would not be signing any players in January, stating that he was satisfied with the quality at his disposal.

“We have quality keepers even in the development. We not planning to sign anyone, besides if there’s any available.

“Why should we run around like headless chickens in this window period, we have good quality.”

Since Khune’s withdrawal from the current campaign through a shoulder injury, Namibian international, Virgil Vries has been the man entrusted with the gloves, with Bafana fringe player, Bryce Bvuma serving as his understudy.

In the three league matches played in this period, Vries has conceded four goals, and came under fire after being culpable in a defensive error which led to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the year.

Khune is part of a long injury list which includes the likes of Lorenzo Gordinho and Ramahlwe Mphahlele – with the latter expected to return to full fitness before the end of the month – while Lebogang Manyama and Mario Booysen could also be set for a period on the sidelines after picking up knocks against AmaZulu last night.
