As reigning Nedbank champions, Riveiro will lead Pirates against Crystal Lake at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

With his sights set on continental football, Riveiro states why their Nedbank title defence campaign is so important for Pirates.

Fresh from a draw against Mamelodi Sundowns, Riveiro hopes they will defend their title and play Caf football next season.

PIRATES COACH RIVEIRO ON THE IMPORTANCE OF NEDBANK CUP DEFENCE

Taking a look at the log table as Pirates trail Sundowns by 13 points, Riveiro wants to keep fighting and cannot just settle for the Confederation Cup.

“The distance with the top of the table is big, but we need to continue,” says Pirates coach Riveiro about Nedbank.

“We need to keep trying to compete in every league game.

“We want to go back to continental football without any discussion.

“And we have the extra motivation to have one more cup to play. We are defending the title.”

RIVEIRO ON FACING MINNOWS IN NEDBANK CUP

Dubbed the cup of shocks where minnows stun teams from the elite division, Riveiro expects a tough challenge against Lake.

On the other hand, Riveiro finds inspiration from their progress last season – Pirates faced three minnows en route to the final.

“It is a competition that I like and I would like to know who we are going to play,” adds Riveiro about the fight in the Nedbank.

“But we will prepare ourselves as usual and we are going to take the game very seriously.

“Because we had an experience last season playing against opponents like Dondol Stars, All Stars, and Venda Football Club.

“It was not an easy path for us.

“We know clearly what is the objective for us and we are going to fight the same way we did against Sundowns.”
