Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is available for selection ahead of Tuesday night’s clash against Baroka at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The veteran shot-stopper was a notable absentee in Saturday’s MTN8 victory over Free State Stars when he was given time off by the club after his girlfriend Sbahle Mpisane was involved in a car accident last Thursday.

One keeper in, one keeper out

In Khune’s absence, former Baroka keeper Virgil Vries took over the gloves and kept a clean sheet in his first competitive appearance for the Glamour Boys. Unfortunately for the Namibian international, he will not be able to add to his match tally as he has been ruled out with knee ligament damage.

Kaizer Chiefs corporate communications manager Vina Maphosa told IOL that no decision had been made yet as to whether the 32-year-old will feature in Polokwane.

“He is in camp with the other two goalkeepers, and the coach will decide overnight as to which one will be the keeper (for the Baroka match). So, he is in the camp, but there’s no decision about him playing yet.”

Coach Giovanni Solinas echoed Maphosa’s statement regarding Khune, saying he was pleased to have him back;

“We have three goalkeepers in camp. We will mull about the selection of the goalkeeper, but it’s good to see that Khune is back in camp and available for selection.”

Solinas’ men are still without a league win this season, having drawn their opener against Mamelodi Sundowns before suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Bidvest Wits.

The game against Baroka kicks off at 19:30 on Tuesday night.
