The year’s first Major golf event will be played 7-10 April at Augusta National, where Woods has captured five of his 15 Major titles, and where Woods last played in a PGA event in November 2020.

The legendary returned to competition towards the end of last year, playing alongside his 12-year-old son Charlie in the PNC Championship. It signified a sensational return to some form of competitive action more than 10 months after a serious car accident that nearly led to his leg being amputated.

In fairness, Woods has described it as a “hit-and-giggle” variety of golf that he can play, but last week reports emerged to suggest the 46-year-old had flown to and from Georgia to see how he could manage the course at Augusta National.

He had previously not pinpointed when he could make a comeback in a high-profile tournament, but on the Masters website, Woods remains on a list of players who are qualified for next week’s event as a past champion, rather than on a list of non-playing past champions.

Woods has now stated that he is heading to Augusta today to “continue preparation and practice”.

“It will be a game-time decision on whether I compete,” he added.

In a 30-minute interview with Golf Digest, Woods recently opened up about a painful year, a possible return to golf, and how challenging his recovery had been after his frightening car accident in February.

Woods suffered comminuted open fractures to both the tibia and the fibula in his right leg after his car crash in Los Angeles on February 23. He was rushed to hospital, where he spent three weeks and faced the possibility of amputation.

“There was a point in time when, I wouldn’t say it was 50/50, but it was damn near there if I was going to walk out of that hospital with one leg. Once I [kept it], I wanted to test and see if I still had my hands. So even in the hospital, I would have [girlfriend] Erica [Herman] and [friend] Rob [McNamara] throw me something. Throw me anything.”

The 15-time major winner also told Golf Digest that although he is confident of eventually making a return to the sport, he expected he would only play select tournaments from now on.

The former world number one suffered compound fractures in his right leg after a car he was driving in a Los Angeles suburb in February 2021 veered off the road and flipped several times.

Before the accident, Woods was already playing a reduced schedule following multiple surgeries on his back and knee over the years.
