Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka believes his club is still well within a shot of the title race, despite languishing in seventh place.

Kaizer Chiefs are, at this stage, more of an afterthought as far as PSL title contenders are concerned, but midfielder George Maluleka believes they are still well within a shot.

Amakhosi have stuttered along to seventh place in the league this season, having collected just 28 points in 20 matches.

With ten matches left to play, they are nine points behind log-leaders Bidvest Wits, and face a stiff challenge from the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, who are better placed for top honours.

However, speaking ahead of their away clash against Polokwane City on Saturday, Maluleka said his side are not yet out of the race.

“Yes. Yes‚ I still think we can do it. It’s going to go down to the last day‚ I think‚ once again‚” the midfielder is quoted by The Sowetan.

“But we believe we are still there.”

Kaizer Chiefs have won four league titles in the PSL era, the last of which came in the 2014/15 season under Bafana coach, Stuart Baxter.

That trophy also happened to be their last piece of silverware to date, but have a chance to end the long drought as they are still in the running for the Nedbank Cup.

Maluleka said there was a belief in the camp that they can still challenge for league honours, despite facing an uphill climb to achieve that.

“I think [it comes from] the whole team. I mean‚ then why are we playing‚ if you are going to believe we’re not going to [challenge]?

“We believe we still can‚ and anything is still possible. Everyone else is also dropping points. You know‚ there’s draws.”

Kaizer Chiefs face Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, before hosting Highlands Park seven days later.

Kick off on Saturday is at 15:30.
