England National Cricket Selectors have named two 16-man squads for the three-match ODI series and three-match T20I series in South Africa.

The ODI series against the Proteas follows the four-match Test series and starts on 4 February in Cape Town. The three-match T20 series against the Proteas begins on 12 February at Buffalo Park in East London.

The ODI series will be the first time that England play in the 50-over format since their World Cup triumph in July. Eight players have been retained from the World Cup squad.

Worcestershire seamer Pat Brown, Somerset batsman Tom Banton and the Lancashire duo of Matthew Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood earn their maiden ODI call-ups. All four made their England debuts during the T20I series in New Zealand which the tourists won on a Super Over.

Stars rested for ODIs

Multi-format stars Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood will be rested for the ODIs but return for the T20s with England looking to add the T20 World Cup title to their ODI triumph. .

Boucher to be named Proteas team director

Banton, Sam Billings, Lewis Gregory, Mahmood and James Vince miss out on the T20I squad having been involved down in New Zealand. Vince enjoyed a stint in South Africa’s Mzansi Super League with the Paarl Rocks, his runs helping the team top the table.

Commenting on the selection of the squad, National Selector Ed Smith said: “These two squads were selected with an eye on the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020.

“In the T20s, a number of players who were rested for the successful 3-2 victory in New Zealand return to the squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Jason Roy.

“We want to expand the pool of players who can perform successfully for England, while also helping the team to peak for major tournaments.”
