Dricus du Plessis has responded to Canadian artist Drake after he placed a unsuccessful bet predicting his defeat at UFC 297.

As reported by TheSouthAfrican, Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter and actor Drake placed a $700 000 (R13 million) bet predicting that South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis LOSING his UFC 297 middleweight title fight against American champion Sean Strickland on Saturday.

Drake, who is no stranger to waging large bets on the outcome of UFC fights, posted his betting slip on an Instagram story for his over 145 million followers to see, but as it turned out, he suffered a big loss as Du Plessis emerged as the middleweight champion on split decision.

Drake laid down the hefty sum on Saturday – and stood to win $679 000 (R12.6 million) – plus have his initial stake returned – if Strickland won, but it ultimately went in the opposite direction.

Du Plessis gleefully took to Twitter to sarcastically thank him: “O snap almost forgot, Thanks Drake”, he commented.

Du Plessis triumphed on a split decision, winning 48-47 on two of the three judges’ scorecards, with the third judge awarding the fight by a similar score to Strickland.

Strickland moved to 28-6 MMA, 15-6 UFC while Du Plessis improved to 21-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC.

Although South Africans had to wake up quite early for the fight, Du Plessis had said he couldn’t wait to have the nation unite behind him.

“South Africa, I know it’s a little early, but crack a beer, get the braai going, it’s going to be electric! I just can’t wait to see the whole country buzzing when we get my hand raised after winning the title. I can’t wait to see the videos of all the watch parties, this is going to be a World Cup 2.0”
