Dutch speed king Dylan Groenewegen edged an ultra-tight bunch sprint on stage seven of the Tour de France on Friday as Italy’s Giulio Ciccone retained the overall race lead.

Groenewegen beat Australia’s Caleb Ewan in a photo-finish to make up for the pain of falling on stage one on the Brussels home straight.

Peter Sagan retained the sprinters’ points green jersey after finishing third.

Pure sprinter Groenewegen was left sat on his backside in Brussels when he had been red-hot favourite to win.

He was left to wonder what might have been as his teammate Mike Teunissen won the opening stage and pulled on the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Stage 7 crash report

Just the one incident…. well, just one of note anyway. Tejay Van Garderen (Education First) and Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma) both crashed inside the peloton early on Stage 7 of the 2019 Tour de France. You can watch the incident here.

Tour de France 2019: Stage 7

Those who reserved some of their energy on Thursday monster Stage 6 have a chance to make inroads here. The first part of this marathon stage will still be taxing, but those who have energy in reserve – both mental and physical – will be blessed with some relief for the latter parts.

Distance: 230km
Profile: The longest stage of this year’s tour, mercifully incline-free for the most part.

Prediction

It’s a day where riders like Elia Vivian, Dylan Groenewegen, Fernando Gaviria and Peter Sagan could come into their own. But, it’s been one of those tours. You just never know. Just ask Julian Alaphillipe who, despite his valiant efforts, had the yellow jersey taken from him on Thursday.

How to watch and start time

The action will be live on SuperSport 5 from 11:10 and should finish at around 17:30. If you don’t have a Dstv subscription, you can follow Le Tour’s YouTube channel for all the highlights.
