In what has proved to be a hugely controversial decision, CSA confirmed that David Teeger will not captain SA U19 at the U19 Cricket World Cup, having cited unverified “safety” concerns for the decision.

As the tournament gets ready to start, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have stated its readiness to host the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

CSA confident of safety measures

The five host venues, Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Kimberley Oval in Kimberley, JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom, Buffalo Park in East London and Willowmoore Park in Benoni – are said to be well prepared to welcome participating teams and spectators.

“The 15th edition of the tournament will be hosted over 24 days with 16 teams competing in 41 matches at the 5 host venues in what promises to be an entertaining festival of cricket,” a statement read.

“We are delighted to host teams and fans from around the world and look forward to showcasing the spirit of cricket in South Africa. Our priority is to ensure that the tournament is a memorable event for all players and fans.

“CSA is fully committed to ensuring the safety of all players and spectators at the various hosting venues. We are taking all the necessary measures to secure these venues and ensure an enjoyable tournament for all involved.

“While CSA respects the right to lawful protests, we emphasise that these cannot interfere with the matches or compromise the safety of players and fans. To this end, we are collaborating closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that the tournament proceeds smoothly and without any disruptions.

“Our focus remains steadfast on delivering a successful and safe World Cup. We appreciate the support and understanding of the cricket community as we work towards another successful global showpiece event on South African soil.”

This decision by CSA to revoke Teeger’s captaincy notably has made headlines across the world, with renowned English broadcaster and journalist Piers Morgan hitting out at CSA, tweeting: “WTF!? Have they sacked him because he’s Jewish? This is shameful moral cowardice by Cricket South Africa.”

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON TEEGER

“CSA has been receiving regular security and risk updates regarding the U19 World Cup,” read a statement on Friday. “We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament.

“We have also been advised that they are likely to focus on the position of the SA U19 captain, David Teeger, and that there is a risk that they could result in conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protestors.

“CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators.

“In all the circumstances, CSA has decided that David should be relieved of the captaincy for the tournament. This is in the best interests of all the players, the SA U19 team and David himself.

“David will remain an important and active member of the squad and we wish him and the team every success in the tournament. The newly appointed captain will be announced in due course.”
