Cricket South Africa (CSA) has issued an injury update on Proteas Test skipper Temba Bavuma after scans revealed he’d picked up a left hamstring strain in the Boxing Day Test against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Bavuma limped off early on Day 1 on Tuesday, 26 December with Aiden Markram taking over as captain.

Questions were asked on Thursday when Bavuma failed to take to the crease with the Proteas nine wickets down and star bowler Marco Jansen stranded on 84 not out.

Shortly thereafter, CSA posted an update on Temba Bavuma’s injury: “Following continuous medical assessments, it was determined that there was too much of a risk of aggravating his left hamstring injury has he gone out to bat at this stage of the game.

“The medical team are managing him to give him the best chance to bat should he be required in the 4th innings.”

The second and final Test will take place at Newlands in Cape Town from 3-7 January 2024.
