Bavuma says Proteas are “in it to win it”

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma believes his team are not going to the 2023 Cricket World Cup just to add numbers but to win it.

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma says the team aims to win the ICC Cricket World Cup which takes place in India from October to November.

The 33-year-old batter, says the men in green and gold are not going to India to add up numbers but will try to win the elusive trophy.

“The road to success is never linear and we’ve definitely had our ups and downs on the road to qualification, but the important thing is that we have made it and we are in it to win it,” Bavuma said after the World Cup schedule was released.

The Proteas open their campaign on 7 October against one of the two teams from the qualifying tournament and Bavuma hopes he can make history.

“I’m looking forward to the showpiece that the tournament is guaranteed to be and hope to lead South Africa to historical achievements,” he added.

“This is going to be an exciting World Cup for everyone involved. With India as hosts, we as players know the kind of fanfare, noise, and festive energy we can expect from fans in and out of the stadiums.

Despite making his One Day International debut in 2016, Bavuma has never played in a 50-over World Cup.

“It’s going to be a carnival of cricket like no other and definitely a World Cup we are looking forward to take part and excelling in.”
