The IPL kicked off with a thriller in Chennai with Royal Challengers Bangalore edging the Mumbai Indians in the final over – thanks largely to AB de Villiers.

Marco Jansen, a 20-year-old from Potchefstroom who is yet to play for the Proteas, almost defended six runs in the final over after a series of inch-perfect yorkers.

Despite the loss, the lanky paceman would end up with tidy figures 2/28 in his four overs.

This, combined with his near-heroics at the death, earned the debutant a mention from Sharma.

“He is definitely a talent that we have identified and we wanted to give him that opportunity,” said Sharma.

“He can bowl in any situation.”

Former Proteas bowling coach Vincent Barnes congratulated Marco Jansen post-match on social media.

“So chuffed for Marco Jansen. I’m not surprised that he steps onto the big stage and performs. Although he is still very young I have been impressed with his maturity, his thoughts and gameplans at different stages of the game and the execution thereof. #fastbowlersunion,” wrote Barnes.
