The wait came to an end and the big party finally kicked off as the 2019 Cricket World Cup began in London on Thursday morning.

Host nation England and South Africa took to the field at The Oval to open the tournament, with the latter winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.

But first, there was a colourful opening ceremony featuring some of the game’s greats having a hit out in the middle.

Familiar faces in the centre of the CWC 2019 opening ceremony

SA-born former England batsman Kevin Pietersen was one of the more familiar faces who were part of the party, alongside two-time World Cup winner, West Indian great Sir Viv Richards and ex-Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene.

Each participating nation had an iconic personality representing it and, for Pakistan, it was human rights activist and Malala Yousafzai waving the flag.
