Charan goes down on one knee as he proposes to Pavan at the Home of Cricket.

The third umpire’s resources had to be called upon to assist in making a different type of decision during the second One Day International between England and India at Lord’s on Saturday.

During the hosts’ innings in the all-important clash, Charan Gill enlisted the help of former England coach and popular SkySports commentator, David Lloyd, otherwise known as “Bumble”, as he had planned to propose to his partner, Pavan Bains as they sat out in the stands soaking up the action in the Home of Cricket.

Backed up by the channel, the camera panned to the couple as Bumble communicated with Charan via an earpiece, giving him cues as he got down on one knee, catching Pavan unawares while – displayed on the big screen – was the game’s famous “decision pending”.

This time around though, it wasn’t the third umpire making the big decision, but the young lady who – to the delight of his partner and the crowd around them – said “yes”.

That got one of the biggest cheers on the day and brought out more enthusiasm from the matchmaker himself than any shot, wicket or catch effected by any of players out on the middle. Even Indian legspinner, Yuzvendra Chahal got a little lost in the moment there for a bit.

The Home of Cricket saw another momentous occasion, as legendary wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni reached 10 000 runs in ODIs as India were chasing a target of 323 set by England.

Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough as the visitors fell 86 runs short, which means that the series is evenly poised at 1-1 with one match to go.
