Cricket South Africa (CSA) president Chris Nenzani has resigned with immediate effect it was announced on on Monday 17 August 2020.

Nenzani had served two terms of three years before being asked to stay on for an extra year in 2019.

Nenzani steps down as CSA president

CSA has been steered into seriously murky waters over the last few years with matters coming to a head with the suspension of CEO Thabang Moroe in November last year.

Calls for Nenzani to step down have grown recently and he took the decision to step down less than a month from completing the extra year.

The decision comes after a week in which CSA dismissed chief operations officer Naasei Appiah with immediate effect for “transgressions of a serious nature”. Appiah has intimated that legal action will be taken against the body for their actions.

Appiah was among three senior CSA officials suspended last October and the second of that group to be dismissed after Clive Eksteen’s termination earlier this year.

The third person suspended, Corrie van Zyl, returned to work in February and CSA have not provided any further updates on his position within the organization.

According to a statement issued by CSA, Nenzani stepped down on Saturday 15 August but the decision was only announced on Monday.

Vice President Beresford Williams will act as President of CSA’s Members Council until the appointment of a new President at the AGM scheduled for 5 September 2020.

“Chris Nenzani has resigned as the President of the Members Council and the Chairman of the board of directors of Cricket South Africa (CSA) with effect from 15 August 2020.

“Mr. Nenzani led Cricket South Africa with dedication and astutely since 2013. Mr. Nenzani has provided valuable leadership, insight, assistance and direction in advancing the game of cricket with a focus on achieving transformation and access for the majority of the South African population.

“On behalf of Cricket South Africa’s Members Council and the board of directors we thank Mr. Nenzani for his contributions to Cricket South Africa and for being a loyal servant to the game of cricket for over 20 years. We wish him well in his future endeavours, and we are sure that he will continue to contribute to the game of cricket.

“The Members Council notes that in terms of the Memorandum of Incorporation (MOI) the Vice President, Mr. Beresford Williams will act as President of the Members Council until the appointment of a new President at the AGM scheduled for 5 September 2020.

“All members of staff are urged to continue with their commitment and dedication in advancing the game of cricket.”
