Mamelodi Sundowns have reached an agreement to acquire the skilled midfielder Matias Esquivel from Club Atlético Lanús in a groundbreaking deal valued at $2.5 million, equivalent to R46.7 million, according to iDiski Times.

The Argentine playmaker finalised personal terms last month, setting the stage for a much-anticipated move that sent shockwaves through his homeland.

Despite widespread expectations of a potential European move following his stellar campaign with Primera División’s fourth-placed team, Esquivel is set to join Sundowns for their mid-season pre-season preparations during the Africa Cup of Nations.

The deal, confirmed after negotiations between the two clubs last week, adds another significant South American talent to Sundowns’ roster.

This follows their earlier success in securing Marcello Allende from Montevideo City Torque in a $3 million deal in August 2022, where the Chile international quickly became a fan favourite.

Downs foreign spots reshuffle

In the wake of Esquivel’s arrival, Sundowns will part ways with Erwin Saavedra, while Divine Lunga transitions into a South African registration, joining the Masandawana first-team after six months of training with the squad, as per SABC Sport.

The Premier Soccer League rules only allows clubs to have a maximum number of five foreign players on their books at any point in time, and KaboYellow have exceeded their quota.

Hence, the strategic acquisition raises questions about the squad dynamics, with uncertainties about which players may be sacrificed to accommodate the latest addition.

Notably, Sundowns had their foreign quota spots filled with Allende, Ribeiro Costa, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Júnior Mendieta, and Abubeker Nasir.

The fate of Mendieta and Nasir, yet to establish themselves as key figures in Rulani Mokwena’s first XI due to injuries, remains uncertain as the club reshapes its lineup to integrate the incoming Argentine sensation.
