Spurs appeared to be dead and buried in their Champions League semi-final against Ajax trailing 2-0 at half time but a second half hat-trick from Lucas Moura fired them into the final in Madrid.

Ajax scored early in the tie with a header from Mathijs De Ligt that made it 2-0 on aggregate. Hakim Ziyech made it two in the night with a superb first time shot that flew into the Spurs net.

At half-time Fernando Llorente came on for Wanyama and suddenly Spurs had an avenue to attack.

A determined run from Lucas resulted in the opening goal for Spurs and a way back into the tie. Shortly afterwards Spurs were all over the Ajax goal and Lucas held his nerve in the box and calmly finished to level on the night.

With Spurs needing one goal to win the tie on away goals, Ajax began to change their shape and the second half became one of cut and thrust from both sides. Ziyech hit the bar twenty minutes from time, and the home side had chances to bury the game.

When Jan Vertonghen was twice denied in the dying moments it seemed Ajax were fated to meet Liverpool in Madrid but the drama wasn’t over.

Lucas was on hand to provide the finishing touch as Spurs through everything into getting over the line.

After the match Danny Rose revealed that Spurs took inspiration from Liverpool’s heroics the night before.

“We saw Liverpool last night. It just goes to show it’s not over until it’s over,” Rose told BT Sport.

“The gaffer mentioned it at the hotel before the match. He said that was the right way to play. He doesn’t mind if we lose if we play like that.

“We were disappointed with the way we played in the first leg and it was the same in the first half here. There were a few words said at half-time.

“It just goes we can beat anyone when we play like that.”
