25-year-old Adrian Wildschutt breaks SA 10 000m record

At the On Track Fest in Walnut, United States, Adrian Wildschutt broke the SA 10 000m record previously held for 24 years by Hendrick Ramaala.

At the On Track Fest in Walnut, United States of America, Adrian Wildschutt broke the South African 10 000m track record previously held for 24 years by Hendrick Ramaala in 27:23.10.

Who is Adrian WildschutT?

Growing up in Ceres Adrian Wildschutt followed his older brother Nadeel to Coastal Carolina University. The brothers were coached by fellow South African Zola (Budd) Pieterse. Adrian transferred Universities during the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of where he studied, he spent much of time at various universities on the Dean’s List due to his impressive academic results. In December 2022 he received his Master’s in business from Florida State University.

He joined HOKA NAZ Elite 2022, before competing in the World Athletics Championships in the 5 000m. Competing in the 10 00m at the Commonwealth Games he finished fifth. After some time back home in back home in South Africa, he moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in the US full time 2023 where the On Track Fest meet was the first one on his calendar.

  • 3,000m – 7:52.38 (2022)
  • 5,000m – 13:09.30 (2022)
  • 10,000m – 27:23.10 (2023)

The 10 000m Record as it stands

The South African record that Hendrick Ramaala set on 22 February 1999 in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) was 27:29:94. Ramaala’s record stood for 24 years until Wildschutt beat it by six seconds clocking 27:23:10, 18 seconds off world leading pace, which is awaiting ratification by Athletics South Africa
