The State of the Nation Address (SONA) is an important, annual address from the Presidency of South Africa. This ‘family meeting’ updates citizens on government’s progress – and raise important issues to the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is delivers his next State of the Nation Address on Tuesday.

Here’s what some have said about the President’s next meeting, and what citizens might expect.

According to the Presidency’s website, the State of the Nation Address is happening on Thursday (8 February, 2024).

The address draws mixed reaction, including bids to have the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) banned from attending. Basic income grants are one of the key issues to address.

Citizens are using the Presidency Facebook page to ask whether previous government issues, like Phala Phala or the Gupta-scandal, have been addressed.

President Ramaphosa delivered his first Address in 2018. So much might have changed in South Africa since then! Nelson Mandela delivered his first in 1994 – after the first election, leading South Africa into a new time.
