SASSA grants can be collected at selected retailers and national offices, but don’t go empty-handed. Queues are long for social grant beneficiaries, and you might be standing in line for a long time to collect your social grant in some locations.

Take these five important items for the SASSA queue, and make social grant collection easier.

1. Something to drink for SASSA queues

Dehydration is a serious issue, and it’s when your body loses more fluid than you’re able to drink.

Take something to drink for an expected SASSA queue. Water or high-electrolyte drinks are recommended if you’re expecting to wait in line during hot weather. Headaches, nausea, and fainting can all be symptoms of severe dehydration according to HealthDirect.gov.

2. Your SASSA-linked cellphone

Cellphone numbers verify your social grant and details on the system. grant recipients need their cellphone to successfully confirm their identity: without this, you may not be able to collect your grant at any retailers, because they can’t tell it is you!

Always remember your linked cellphone for social grant collection day.

3. Your ID

If you collect your social grant from a national retailer, remember to take your identity document along.

Identity documents are just as important as your SASSA-linked cellphone for successful grant collection. Without these documents, officials are unable to tell that you are the rightful recipient to collect this grant.

If you have forgotten your ID, then you will likely have to go back home and get it before collecting your grant.

4. A powerbank

A powerbank stores charge, and can be used to charge phones. It’s for more than just loadshedding, but can also restore battery life to your phone if you’re stuck in the social grant line.

Imagine that your battery dies before you’re at the front of the queue. Without phone confirmation, you may be unable to collect your social grant.

5. Friends or family

Criminals on the prowl are knwon to target recipients on grant day, and you should always be aware that even criminals can check grant dates.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) advises people to never walk around alone. This is very true when collecting your SASSA grant.

Don’t travel alone, and go with a trusted group of friends or family to collect your social grant.
