Oscar Pistorius released on parole, says Correctional Services

Almost 11 years after the events that resulted in the death of Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar Pistorius has been released on parole. Correctional Services confirmed his release through a statement on their website, adding a new chapter to the biography of the now-infamous athlete.

Oscar Pistorius released on parole, says Correctional Services

The decision to place Oscar Pistorius on parole was taken on 24 November 2023, says a statement by the Department of Correctional Services.

His official release on parole was actioned from 5 January this year, reads the documentation from the SA government.

“General parole conditions” will apply to Oscar, including being prohibited from consuming alcohol. There is also a prohibition against conducting interviews with the media,

His release comes just over a decade after the initial sentence, which saw one of the most highly publicized trials in the country.

The Oscar Pistorius Case

The ‘Oscar Pistorius Case’ refers to the fatal shooting of South African personality Reeva Steenkamp, which became one of South Africa’s most famous and televised trials.

Accounts of the events that occurred on 14 February, 2013 were put to trial.

The court case lasted until the final verdict was delivered on 11 to 12 September, 2014. When the verdict was delivered, it was for the charges of culpable homicide and reckless endangerment that Oscar went into the system.
