COVID-19: SA records more than 11 000 cases, positivity rate jumps to 22,4%

South Africa recorded more than 11 000 new COVID-19 cases and 274 hospitalisations on Thursday. Gauteng accounted for 72% of the new infections.

South Africa recorded more than 11 000 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 2 December, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 51 402 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 22,4 percent up from yesterday’s 16,5 percent. Gauteng continues to drive the wave of new infections.

SA ADDS 11 535 NEW COVID-19 CASES

The 11 535 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Thursday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 47 328. Unfortunately, 44 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 89 915.

There were 274 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 258 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 2904 patients admitted.

“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 22.4% which is higher than yesterday (16.5%). The 7-day average is 12.6% today, which is higher than yesterday (10.3%),” said the NICD.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The majority of the cases identified on Thursday were found in Gauteng (72%), followed by the Western Cape (6%) and KwaZulu-Natal (5%).

Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West each accounted for 4 percent, respectively, while, the Free State and Eastern Cape had 2 percent each. The Northern Cape rounded off the list with 1 percent of the cases on Thursday.

  • Free State – 251 cases (138);
  • Gauteng – 8280 cases (6168);
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 630 cases (476);
  • Limpopo – 421 cases (271);
  • Mpumalanga – 454 cases (375);
  • North West – 497 cases (356);
  • Northern Cape – 81 cases (36);
  • Western Cape – 727 cases (626); and
  • Unallocated – 0 cases.
