COVID-19: SA records more than 2400 cases and 7 deaths
South Africa recorded more than 2400 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The country has nearly 35 000 active cases

South Africa recorded more than 2 000 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday 24 February, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 30 818 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 7,8%.
SA ADDS 2411 NEW COVID-19 CASES
The 2411 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Thursday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 34 847. Unfortunately, 7 more people died of COVID-19-related complications in the last 24 to 48 hours, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 99 018.
There were 82 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 259 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 3075 patients admitted.
“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 7.8%, which is lower than yesterday (8.7%). The 7-day average is 7.7% today, which is lower than yesterday (7.9%),” said the NICD.
PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN
The majority of the cases identified on Thursday were found in Gauteng (36%), followed by the Western Cape (20%) and KwaZulu-Natal with 18 percent.
Mpumalanga accounted for 8 percent, while the Free State had 6 percent. Northern Cape accounted for 5 percent and the Eastern Cape had 4 percent. Limpopo had 3 percent and the North West rounded off the list with 2 percent of the day’s cases.
The list below shows the new COVID-19 cases identified by province:
- Eastern Cape – 85 cases;
- Free State – 133 cases;
- Gauteng – 874 cases;
- KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 427 cases;
- Limpopo – 69 cases;
- Mpumalanga – 185 cases;
- North West – 115 cases;
- Northern Cape – 43 cases;
- Western Cape – 480 cases; and
- Unallocated – 0 cases.
