There’s a Tumblr page dedicated to documenting racism in suburbia

Racism in the ‘burbs of Cape Town has never been so ugly.

A Tumblr page entitled ‘Suburban Fear’ has been documenting the racist and downright crazy things posted to neighbourhood watch groups on Facebook.

The purpose of the page is to highlight how racism and discrimination is still rife in South Africa, particularly in the suburbs of Cape Town.

Here are a sample of the typical posts found on the blog:

The website’s creator, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Eyewitness News that there was a need to create the blog to show the extent of the discrimination in community networks and neighbourhood watch groups.

“If I had a five-year-old child, and had to warn him/her about suspicious individuals, based on the descriptions given on the blogs, the child would grow up fearing or always being suspicious of black people,” the blog’s author told the publication.

There has been mixed feedback on the blog, some saying that it is nothing but a storm in a teacup, and others accepting that South africa has a long way to go.

The author is content that the blog is facilitating getting the right conversations started.
