Outgoing Democratic Alliance (DA) Chief Whip in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Zwakele Mncwango says party members are afraid to speak or challenge the leadership.

Mncwango tendered his resignation as a Member of the Provincial Legislature which will be effective on 15 October 2022.

DA MEMBERS AFRAID TO CHALLENGE LEADERSHIP

In an interview with eNCA about his resignation, Mncwango also touched on the ousting of Mpho Phalatse as the Executive Mayor in the City of Johannesburg.

Mncwango said he has no doubt that the DA’s arrogance as others have cited is the reason for the multi-party coalition collapse in Johannesburg.

“I personally believe that it was because of the DA being arrogant that the multi-party coalition in Johannesburg collapsed. Some might disagree and say that was not the case, however, I believe that in our approach to coalitions in general there is some kind of arrogance,” he said.

The former DA KZN provincial leader said the issue starts when you start speaking out on why you believe the party is being arrogant.

“You will be sidelined, prosecuted and be told you spoke out against the party. There’s no space to speak out and deal with these issues.”

When delivering his last address as provincial leader in March this year Mncwango said that every year for the past six years there was an investigation against him.

“Every year, some of the people I worked with in the DA fabricated allegations against me but strange enough, I was never charged or appeared before a disciplinary committee.

“I have never had the privilege to enjoy support from national leadership like other provincial leaders but I kept going and strong,” Mncwango said
