Last week ANC member and son of the President, Edward Zuma, was accused of hate speech after slamming Pravin Gordhan and Derken Hanekom. Zuma wrote an open letter labelling the pair sell-outs “askaris” and accused them of protecting white monopoly capital.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)  then announced that they would investigate Zuma for hate speech. The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal also called him out.

Fast-forward a few days and now the ANC and SAHRC have found that Zuma’s comments in his open letter promotes hatred on the basis of race.

Edward Zuma attacked the rights commission on Saturday, accusing them of being against the black majority.

“[the SAHRC are] a vile dog unleashed to maul the black majority‚ to manage them‚ to sanitise their history and to keep them in check when expressing their history and articulating their black pain”.

The commission has since warned that Zuma could end up serving jail time if he continues with his racist vitriol. Spokeswoman Gail Smith said that they will engage Zuma and decide what action to take.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesman Mdumiseni Ntuli revealed that the party has instructed Edward Zuma to retract his statement and even apologise.

“We have given him five days to do this. He has failed to separate and contextualise criticism against the president. He has personalised it and used racial connotations in dealing with comrade Pravin and comrade Hanekom. If he fails … we will bring him before the disciplinary committee to explain “himself.”

It is believed that the KZN ANC were under to pressure to act against Zuma ater they had decided to charge Makhosi Khoza for “ill discipline”
