The Democratic Alliance (DA) has demanded that former president Jacob Zuma immediately return to Estcourt Correctional Centre to serve the remainder of his 15-month sentence.

ZUMA IS BACK IN SOUTH AFRICA AFTER HIS VISIT TO RUSSIA

The DA’s call comes after the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) delayed announcing a timeline for Zuma’s return to prison.

“The delay in announcing the return of Zuma to prison is untenable, and he must immediately return to Estcourt Correctional Centre to continue serving the remainder of his term without further delay.

“South Africans have waited for far too long to see accountability brought upon powerful ANC politicians, who act with impunity and a lack of respect for the justice system. The principle of equality before the law must now be upheld. We urge Commissioner Thobakgale to make a decision with the urgency this moment requires.”

THE DELAY IS ANNOUCING ZUMA’S RETURN TO PRISON IS CAUSING ANXIETY

Breytenbach said that the DCS’s delay in announcing Zuma’s return to prison was causing anxiety and raising doubts about the strength of the nation’s judicial system.

“This delay is unacceptable, as anxiety across the nation continues to rise as clarity on the details of former President Zuma’s return to prison remains unforthcoming,” she said. “In addition, this continued delay is casting unnecessary doubt over the strength of our nation’s judicial system.”

IT IS ALSO RAISING DOUBTS ABOUT THE STRENGT OF SA’S JUDICIAL SYSTEM

The DA said that it would take further action if necessary to ensure that justice is served and court orders are upheld.

“Should the Department of Correctional Services make a final decision that is illegal or irregular, the DA will not hesitate to take further necessary action to ensure that justice is served and the order of the Constitutional Court and SCA is upheld,”

said Breytenbach.

THE SUPREME COURT OF APPEAL RULED THAT HIS RELEASE WAS UNLAWFUL

The DA’s call for Zuma’s immediate return to prison comes after he was released on medical parole in September 2021. However, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruled in July 2022 that his release was unlawful and that he must return to prison.

ZUMA MUST RETURN BACK TO PRISON- WILL THIS HAPPEN?

Zuma has since returned to South Africa from Russia, where he had been staying. He is currently at his Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

The DCS has not yet announced a timeline for Zuma’s return to prison.
