Former president Jacob Zuma had a slip-of-the-tongue moment when he told a group of Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) supporters to vole for the African National Congress (ANC) instead of MK.

Even though Zuma was speaking at a MK branch launch in his home town of Nkandla, many people were sympathetic saying it was an honest mistake and that he still loved the ANC.

“Lol, President Zuma still loves the ANC shame…..what an honest mistake,” wrote Meshack Bevhula on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

ZUMA: I WILL NOT CAMPAIGN OR VOTE FOR ANC

In December last year, Zuma publicly announced that he would not vote or campaign for the ANC during the 2024 national elections even though he still remains a party member.

“In 2024 I will vote for Umkhonto we Sizwe [MK] party. I have decided that I cannot and will not campaign for the ANC of [president Cyril] Ramaphosa. It is not the ANC I joined; it will be a betrayal to campaign for the ANC of Ramaphosa. My conscience will not allow that,” Zuma said in an announcement that caused tensions for him with the ANC.

BID TO BE PRESIDENT ‘UNCONSTITUTIONAL’

Despite his ongoing legal battles, Zuma has indicated that he wants to comeback to politics to “fix things” because he was removed prematurely.

However, constitutional law experts say he is not eligible to be elected to the National Assembly due to the fact that he was found guilty of the crime of contempt of court and sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment.

Zuma was charged in 2021 with multiple counts of corruption over a multibillion-dollar arms deal that South Africa signed in 1999 with French company Thales. He is accused of taking hundreds of bribes to help Thales get the deal.
