Zuma longs to appear in court

Jacob Zuma said, he has no intention of abandoning his desire to privately prosecute, prosecutor Billy Downer and journalist Laryn Maughan.

Former President Jacob Zuma has stated that he has no intention of abandoning his desire to privately prosecute, prosecutor Billy Downer and journalist Laryn Maughan.

He has filed an appeal against a Pietermaritzburg High Court judgement that barred him from prosecuting the two in the future.

What did Downer and Maughan do?

Zuma accuses Downer of sharing information from his medical records with Maughan, which is illegal.

Downer and Maughan, who were scheduled to appear in court on Friday, must appear as scheduled to his appeal of the court’s judgement on Thursday.

Zuma has just returned from Russia, where he was reportedly receiving medical treatment. He is accused of using these petitions to postpone his trial for allegedly soliciting bribes from a French business that received contracts in South Africa’s R60 million arms sales.

Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services announced on Thursday that Zuma will be returned to prison to complete his term.

Last month, the Constitutional Court denied the prisons departments application to appeal a Supreme Court of Appeal finding that his release on medical parole was illegal.

“The next step is for the national commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, to review all materials received, the Supreme Court of Appeals decision, and Corrections prescripts.” Commissioner Thobakgale is expected to make his judgement by August 10, and it will be made public,” said department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

What was Zuma arrested for?

He was sent to prison for failing to attend before Zondo Commission of inquiry into state Capture despite a Concourt ruling.

Former Corrections Services Chief Arthur Fraser illegally released Zuma after overturning a Medical Parole Advisory Board ruling that Zuma should not be released on medical parole.
