A young man was convicted and sentenced to life in prison after he pleaded guilty on three counts of rape.
According to Monica Nyuswa, the National Prosecuting Authority the man appeared in the KwaMhlanga Regional Court on Friday.
“The KwaMhlanga Regional Court sentenced Paris Mphela (21) from KwaMhlanga to life imprisonment for the rape of three adult females.”
She said Mphela pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and was eventually convicted.
“These offences were committed between June 2019 and November 2020 in KwaMhlanga.”
Nyuswa said one victim was attacked by Mphela and another unknown perpetrator.
“They dragged her to the bushes and took turns to rape her.”
He was granted bail and continued with his rape spree while he was out on bail.
“Mphela attacked two other women in their homes where one was dragged out of the yard, assaulted, and forcefully raped. The other woman was raped more than once.”
She said one of the women knew Mphela as they stayed in the same neighborhood.
“The woman identified him by his gold tooth to the police and he was subsequently arrested. Buccal DNA swabs were taken and linked him to other rapes.”
Regional Court Prosecutor, Bianca Harmse brought to the court’s attention the scourge of gender-based violence in society.
“She requested the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence. Victim Impact Statements which showed that they all suffered emotional and psychological trauma were presented to the court.”
The magistrate considered Mphela’s guilty plea as a sign of remorse by not letting the victims testify and he also saved the court’s time.
“She took all the three counts of rape together for sentence and sentenced him to life imprisonment. She also declared Mphela unfit to possess a firearm.”
