You Part 1 Recap

The end of the show is upon us and luckily the producers of the show have divided the final season into two installments. This has provided a sense of delayed gratification for those who cannot imagine a life without Joe’s antics, in order to prepare for the second installment a You part 1 recap would be suitable.

The psychological thriller stole the hearts of Netflix users when it premiered September 2018 and now has a cult following. The four seasons have provided us with a glimpse into the mind of Joe Goldberg and the various women that he is obsessed with. It is fitting that a You part 1 recap would not be complete if a mention of the previous seasons was not done.

The first installment of the two-part series finale provided as with a new setting for the show as seen in the second season where Joe relocates to Los Angeles but this time Joe has moved to London even though we last saw him in Paris where he was tracking his latest obsession Marienne. The setting might be different but the running theme is the same; Joe running away from his actions which always involve the murder of someone.

This time Joe has managed to create a new life for himself as an American professor at an English University. It all seemingly goes well until an incident occurs that doubled as one of the best frame jobs in the world of television shows. The journey of Joe playing detective is entertaining and his narrations still maintain the right level of sarcasm and wit.

The character development of Joe is interesting and this time we see him going from being the hunter to the hunted. It can be said that he has truly met his match in the form of Rhys. The season introduced a great set of characters who even though they came across as entitled snobs all had a dark side. This is seen in the show when as the viewer you are trying to figure out who is giving Joe a taste of his own medicine.

The unmasking of the villain so far from the actual final episode provides a great backdrop for the last installment as we see Joe going back to his former habits in order to take Rhys down. The first part of the final season was not everyone’s cup of tea as one critic for USA Today stated that ‘the show had turned into a soap opera’, this comment might be a little extreme but there were some unnecessarily dramatic moments.

The woman in his life this season is completely different from the women that we have seen Joe obsess over. The character of Kate might be vanilla compared to Love, who could be seen as a female alternative to Joe but it is interesting to see Joe resist all his urges to build a physical relationship with Kate which he eventually does under the disguise of protecting her.

The trailer for the last season definitely gives the message that the show will definitely be going out with a bang. The fight scenes between Rhys and Joe are bound to be epic. In order to fully enjoy a You part 1 recap you have to consider how Joe’s actions would have assisted with his character development. The last installment of the series finale will give us a better picture of this.
