“You don’t get what you deserve, but what you negotiated” – McKenzie on Zahara’s music contract

Patriotic Alliance leader and businessman Gayton McKenzie shared his opinion on the Zahara music deal after the DJ Sbu backlash.

While the sombre memorial service for Afro pop sensation Zahara took place today, Thursday, 14 December, the debate about her music contract continued on the socials.

GAYTON MCKENZIE WEIGHS IN ON THE ZAHARA MUSIC CONTRACT

As the fans of the Zahara, real name, Bulelwa Mtukukana, continued to bash Dj Sbu, co-founder of TS Records, for allegedly exploiting the late musician – Patriotic Alliance leader and businessman Gayton McKenzie shared his opinion on the saga.

“The sad saga of Zahara and royalties is such a teachable moment for many. Lesson: You sadly don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate,” he said, alluding that Zahara signed a bad deal.

SONGSTRESS’ MEMORIAL SERVICE OBSERVED

Nevertheless, the Loliwe hitmaker’s memorial service at the Rhema Bible Church in Randburg attracted industry peers and family who all came out to pay their respects to the beloved musicians.

Zahara’s former bosses, TK Nciza and Dj Sbu were among the attendees at the moving memorial service. DJ Sbu has went public and denied swindling the star out of her hard-earned profits from her studio albums. He cited that he has paper work to prove his case.

MINISTER ZIZI KODWA CHALLENGES SAMRO

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 13 December, Minister Zizi Kodwa revealed his visit to South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) despite limiting the nitty-gritty information of the meeting.
“I met with @SAMROMusic Chairperson and CEO, as I’d committed at its recently held AGM. I challenged SAMRO to protect the well-being and livelihood of musicians. I am pleased and support SAMRO’s ongoing investigation of the exploitation of musicians by record labels,” said Minister Kodwa.

The singer will be buried in the Eastern Cape on 23 December.

Some of her fans have appealed to the government for a Provincial Funeral.
