Traffic authorities are calling on soccer lovers who intend to watch the World Cup in pubs and taverns to avoid drunk driving

Soccer lovers have been urged to act responsibly and avoid drinking and driving during the World Cup games.

WORLD CUP GAMES BEGAN TODAY


This comes as the Soccer World Cup started in Qatar today, Sunday, 20 November. Drunk driving is one of the major causes of fatal crashes in South Africa, Road Traffic Management Corporation indicated.

“It is estimated that up to 27% of fatal crashes in the country are attributable to drunk driving. These can be avoided by taking a few simple steps,” RTMC suggested.

TIPS TO REMAIN ON THE SAFE SIDE OF THE LAW

  • If going out drinking far from with friends, have a designated sober driver.
  • Where this is not possible, make use of public transport or e-hailing services to get home safely.
  • Law enforcement officers will also be stepping up their drunk driving operations for the duration of the football tournament to help those who cannot help themselves and keep the roads safe.

“South Africans are renowned for their love for football and for binge drinking.
Officers would not like to spoil the fun. However fun-loving motorists must also play their part and avoid drunk driving,” RTMC urged.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup, also known as Qatar 2022, is an international football tournament, the 22nd FIFA World Cup, contested by the men’s national teams of FIFA’s member associations taking place in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022.

The first game of the tournament saw the hosting country (Qatar) take on Ecuado where they lost 0 – 2 in the opening encounter.
