However, the lady was having none of this and, it is alleged, the 25-year-old deceased began to assault her with fists, preventing her from leaving their shared room.

It was during the fight that the lady reached for the knife and stabbed the man once in the abdomen.

“He died a short while later at a local clinic,” he reported.

POLICE COMMANDER REFLECTS ON THE STABBING INCIDENT

The Station Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, expressed shock at this death which, he felt, could’ve been avoided.

He believes people in relationships could learn to look for signs of a potential abuser.

“More often victims tend to ignore these signs. They need not be ignored.”

“Going through someone’s phone without their consent, deciding who they can relate and not relate with are some of the signs ( commonly known in township iskhwele),” said Brigadier Ngcobo.

“It is advisable that when in such a situation the person should seek assistance as soon as possible to avoid a tragedy such as this,” he added.

The woman has since appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge that she’s facing.
