South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries whose gold cards have expired or haven’t been collected can access their grants at selected retailers as Postbank has launched a new method of paying grants that does not require a physical card.
Some Postbank issued SASSA gold cards were set to expire at the end of March 2023. A number of beneficiaries have complained about not being able to renew their cards at South African Post Office (SAPO) branches due to a number of reasons.
Postbank said SASSA beneficiaries whose cards have expired or are soon to be expired no longer need to go to Post Office branches as they can access their grants safely and free at participating retailers like Shoprite, Usave, Boxer, Pick n Pay and Boxer.
To use this new method, beneficiaries need to bring their ID documents and use their SASSA/gold card PIN.
Postbank spokesperson Bongani Dlako said at the till point, beneficiaries will be asked to validate their identity, enter their cellphone number and then their PIN in order to receive their payment and can get assistance from cashiers.

Dlako said the cardless grant payment method will be available to those who have not collected their new gold cards and those who simply want to collect their grants without their cards.
The system was rolled out to retailers for May payment dates and there is no need for SASSA grant recipients to switch their payment method from the gold cards.
