Did former spy boss Arthur Fraser just get Jacob Zuma out of jail?

It seems a very dear friend of Jacob Zuma may have had a significant influence on the decision to release him on medical parole.

With friends in high places, Jacob Zuma’s release from prison on medical parole was perhaps an inevitability more than anything else – and his trusty former spy chief Arthur Fraser may have had a hand in the decision.

Who is Arthur Fraser?

Fraser now serves as the Commissioner for Correctional Services, and the process to grant an inmate medical parole usually features input from someone in his position. Any prisoner in ill-health has to meet a certain set of criteria before they can be freed from their jail cell. Despite some grey areas remaining, Msholozi got the rub of the green.

This has really drawn Arthur Fraser’s role into the spotlight. The former SSA figure did a lot of JZ’s bidding when he was president, and allegedly leaked the ‘spy tapes’ which derailed a corruption case against the ex-head of state.

Fraser was also named as one of the ‘President’s Keepers’ by investigative journalist Jacques Pauw.

Jacob Zuma’s medical parole leaves a sour taste

John Steenhuisen is extremely suspicious of these connections, and the DA leader has accused Fraser of going above and beyond his station to get Zuma out of jail. A request for a Parliamentary inquiry into his role will be filed at some point this week, and critics of the medical parole approval believe that Msholozi has benefited from ‘unlawful practices’.

“It should be noted that this medical parole was granted to Zuma by his former spy boss, Arthur Fraser – a man deeply implicated in the corruption of the State Security Agency and accused of running an illegal parallel intelligence structure. Instead of firing him, President Cyril Ramaphosa promoted him to his current position of prisons boss.”

“I will also request that the Justice and Correctional Services Committee summon Arthur Fraser to explain to Parliament his decision to grant this medical parole in direct contravention of the Correctional Matters Amendment Act.”
