As South Africa edges towards a lighter version of lockdown in the next few days, there are some regions that will have to remain in a form of ‘Level 4 detention’. There is a clutch of COVID-19 hot-spots causing major concern for local and national governments, and the problem areas have been now been mapped.
We have the Western Cape Government to thank for these images – the six worst-hit regions and sub-districts in the country reside in the south-west. During a digital presentation on Wednesday, officials highlighted the areas currently experiencing a spike in coronavirus cases.
The Western Cape itself has recorded 187 of South Africa’s 312 deaths, and more than 60% of all COVID-19 cases have been reported in the province. Despite the grim figures, Premier Alan Winde is confident that the WC will move to Level 3 with the rest of the country – even if Health Minister Zweli Mkhize thinks otherwise.
However, local officials face an enormous task if they are to justify easing their restrictions…
