The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Western Cape says the taxi strike will last until 9 August.

The taxi association called an immediate stay-away effective 15:00 on Thursday, 3 August.

HOW LONG WILL THE WESTERN CAPE TAXI STRIKE LAST?

The Western Cape Government suspended its participation in the Minibus Taxi Task Team, citing two reasons: the increase and continuous impoundments of vehicles and the lack of progress on issues tabled.

SANTACO said a mass meeting was held on Thursday, 3 August, and the Provincial Executive Committee convened it, the Regional Association Executive Committees and Primary Associations operating in the Western Cape and the National Office of SANTACO.

The taxi association said the purpose of the meeting was to take decisive actions regarding the “unfair treatment” by the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town.

The taxi industry in the province will be embarking on a provincial-wide stay-away which will last until 9 August.

“During this stay-away, there will be no march or any form of protests that will take place. All operations will stop, and we have urged our operators to refrain from any acts of violence and threatening behaviour. Normal taxi operations will resume on the 10th of August 2023, after which we will make further announcements on the way forward,” SANTACO said.

Earlier, it was reported that the N2 in both directions was blocked by taxis, severely affecting traffic. Several incidents of public violence were also recorded where vehicles were stoned and set alight in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, Langa and N2, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
