Warning: Gusts of up to 80km/h expected in Western Cape and Northern Cape

The weather service issued a Yellow Level 2 wind warning for the Western Cape and Northern Cape, with gusts reaching up to 80km/h.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for wind in the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Tuesday, 13 June. The wind is associated with a series of cold fronts expected to make landfall throughout the week.

WIND WARNING FOR WESTERN AND NORTHERN CAPE

Each of the cold fronts will cause periods of strong gusts. Strong to gale force westerly to northwesterly winds between 50 to 70km/h, gusting up to 80km/h are forecasted over the City of Cape Town, Winelands, Overberg, Central Karoo and Karoo Hoogland (Northern Cape).

The wind is expected from Tuesday evening until Thursday, 15 June. “The winds along the southwestern coastal towns will moderate by Wednesday late morning,” said the weather service.

The potential impacts include:

  • Damage to informal and formal settlements can be expected.
  • Some routes could be affected by. falling trees blocking the road.
  • Longer travel times.
  • High-sided vehicles could experience difficulty on prone routes like the N1 Highway.
  • Damage to temporary structures.
