WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT?

According to road safety organisation Arrive Alive the law states that “if a person is involved in, or contribute to, an accident on a public road in which any other person is killed or injured or suffers damage in respect of any property or animal.”

The repercussions for leaving the scene of an accident include jail time if convicted or a fine.

Arrive Alive says, “a driver who fails to stop after an accident when required to do so by law is liable to be prosecuted and, if convicted, fined up to R36000, or sent to prison for up to nine years, or both.”

Let’s hope that the SA driver learned his lesson and faced the wrath of the law for his selfish act by attempting to leave the accident scene.
